Winson Spoke at Microsoft Research Asia Faculty Summit 2014 (MSRAFS 2014)

Winson Peng was invited to speak at MSRAFS 2014 in Beijing on Oct 30-31, 2014. The title of Winson’s presentation is “Visual Analysis of Topic Coopetition on Social Media”. The presentation is based on a collaborative research project between the Lab, MSRA, and Nanyang Technological University. In this project, we proposed a mathematical model and visual analytical system to examine how social topics cooperate and compete with each other to attract public attention. The model and the visual system are empirically tested with about 450 million tweets collected from Twitter in 2013. Details of the project have been reported in Sun et al. (2014) EvoRiver: Visual Analysis of Topic Coopetition on Social Media. IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. MSARFS is a biannual event organized by Microsoft Research. The theme of MSRAFS 2014 is “Computing in Science”. Most of the participants are computer scientists from academic institutions and Microsoft Research, including two Turing Award Recipients and several ACM/IEEE fellows. Winson is the only social scientist who was invited to present in the Summit. His presentation attracted attention from researchers in Hong Kong, South Korea, mainland China and MSRA.
