Doonie Ng of St Paul High School Visits Web Mining Lab

Donnie Ng, a form 5 student from St. Paul’s Secondary School, accompanied by his teacher, visited web mining lab and the department of media and communication in August 22, 2011. Donnie is working on her research project to find out how communication technology impact on social life? To be specific, is communication technology bringing people together or pushing them apart? Given the technology’s negative influence on social interaction, Donnie wants to look into the possibility of public awareness of the negative effect brought by ineffective communication on interpersonal relationship. Jonathan Zhu talked with them about the topic above, especially the advantages and disadvantages of face-to-face communication by introducing media richness theory. Zhang Lun, a current research member of web mining lab, talked about the social information processing theory to address cyber communication’s positive effect. After the discussion, Donnie had photos with Jonathan Zhu and other lab members, and toured the department of media and communication.
